New to the C-Suite: the Chief Commercial Officer

fordyce-default

Heidrick & Struggles says a new power center is emerging in the C-suite — the chief commercial officer.

In its white paper, “The Rise of the Chief Commercial Officer,” the executive search firm says it has seen a “dramatic increase” in organizations looking for a single executive leader at the right hand of the CEO. The job is simply to drive growth and ensure integrated commercial success, according to the white paper.

Companies are looking for one person who can own this responsibility as it touches all divisions — from sales and marketing to customer service and product development — and they are hiring CCOs to fill this space.

For example, in 2001, there were five CCO appointments at companies globally. By 2008, that number had reached 56. With 36 appointments in the first half of 2009, this year will have the highest number of CCO appointments yet.

Recruiters Upbeat About Year, Even If Searches Are Down

recruiter-confidence-index2

execunet-logo2A new report from ExecuNet says executive recruiters and search firms predict that executive hiring should pick up in the second half of 2009, after a tough first six months.

Recruiters participating in the annual ExecuNet Job Market Intelligence Report predict a 14 percent decline in searches through June, after which a boomlet is expected that will erase most of the decline, ending 2009 down 4 percent over 2008.

The optimism is also reflected in the latest ExecuNet’s Recruiter Confidence Index. In decline since the beginning of 2007, the index rebounded from a low of 26 percent to 38 percent between February and March.

growth-in-search-assignments1“We’ve been tracking their confidence level since the last recession, and their confidence has always been a leading indicator of the economy and executive employment,” ExecuNet President and Chief Economist Mark Anderson. “During the last recession, we saw recruiter confidence quickly strengthen six months ahead of the recovery.”

The report is the product of a survey of some 5,000 executives, search consultants, and corporate HR professionals. It’s an annual snapshot of the executive job market that spots trends and offers guidance for executives and recruiters.

Are Head-Hunters Afraid Of the Future?

fordyce-default

Head-hunters, internal and external, need to stop concentrating on the stuff anyone can do and work on their people skills, because technology is catching up to us.

I’m a fan of U.S. sci-fi of the 50s and 60s. I love the fact that it is both a tour of the imagination and a window into American attitudes and society at the time. In particular, Philip K. Dick and Robert Silverberg.

Both wrote about the effect of technology on people, which is always more interesting that Death Robots from Mars intent on incinerating virginal heroines, which is how most sci-fi of that time is remembered.

In particular, I remember a book that had a world where people only ever met via 3D imaging – many people had never actually been in the room as another living person since birth.

When I go online, I find that we’re halfway there — “best friends” have never actually met!

Conversely, I’ve been meeting and greeting a bit lately. I was present at a ‘Tweet-Up’ (a Twitter group meet-up) where 15 people met for the first time.

David Manaster is raising some interesting points about using social media effectively. In a recent webinar on recruiting technology trends, an overwhelming amount of recruiters (66.82%) indicated that LinkedIn is their preferred social networking tool. What methods do you use, and which work best? What are the trends you’re predicting for 2009? What fads will cool off in the new year, and of course, which are just getting warmed up? Or are you a “phone will remain king” type of recruiter?

Recruiting Robots and Other Trends in 2025

fordyce-default

Robots might be filling in for most service workers by 2025? A new report says robotics technology will be far enough along to take over for many low-skill jobs and beyond.

Check out “Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World” by the National Intelligence Council to read up on these and other concepts of a new workforce. It offers long-range strategic thinking about the military and economic challenges the U.S. will face from other countries over the next 17 years. Some highlights from the report:

  • Robots could fill some healthcare jobs and provide care for the elderly.
  • These machines could disrupt unskilled labor markets and affect immigration patterns by taking over some jobs now performed by migrant workers.
  • The report predicts widespread use of “human cognitive augmentation technologies,” otherwise known as wearable devices that can help improve vision, hearing, and memory.
  • Asia, Africa, and Latin America will account for virtually all population growth over the next 20 years; less than 3% of the growth will occur in the West. Europe and Japan will continue to outdistance the emerging powers of China and India in per capita wealth, but they will struggle to maintain growth rates because the size of their working-age populations will decrease.
  • An exception to the aging of populations will be the United States. The report says we will experience higher birth rates and more immigration. The number of migrants seeking to move from disadvantaged to relatively privileged countries is likely to increase, the report says.

Recruiter Job Trends

jobgraph1

Shout-out to the the good folks at Indeed.com for this recruiter job trends graph:

Also this week, a report released by the Association of Executive Search Consultants (AESC) shows a dip in in worldwide executive search revenues. The AESC reports a decline of 6.3% from the previous quarter, accounting for the first quarterly drop since Q4 2006.

Year-on-year executive search industry revenues grew 2.8% annually in the third quarter of 2008, and the AESC says this represented the least year-on-year growth since Q1 2005.

“As might be expected in the light of the current economic turmoil, executive search clients are being more cautious about initiating new senior hires than they were earlier this year,” says Peter Felix, AESC president.

Nevertheless, he notes that the extent of the decline in worldwide revenues for the industry is still relatively minor and many parts of the world and many sectors are still showing strong demand.

Felix says he is “confident” that once the current uncertainty abates and organizations begin to plan their way out of recession that executive search consultants will see strong demand from clients who require help in finding and recruiting the best talent available to them.

“Executive talent is still in very short supply around the world and only few organizations will ignore the necessity to invest in their leaders for the future,” he adds.

The report also shows that the number of retained executive searches started worldwide in the third quarter declined 3.5% compared to Q3 2007. Searches decreased in all regions except Central/South America, which rose 18% from Q3 2007, the report shows. Finally, Europe experienced the largest yearly decline in searches, down 7.6%; Asia/Pacific was down 5.2%; and North America fell 2.1%.

Emerging Trends for Workers

fordyce-default

A few worker trends from CareerBuilder’s Q4 2008 job forecast:

  • Workers are taking on second jobs. How else to pay for the increased cost of gas and food? About 25% of workers are considering a second job, while 9% already have taken on a second job in 2008 to help make ends meet.
  • Workers are postponing active job search and proceeding with caution. Most are not actively pursuing a change in employment, with 38% saying they will likely stay at their current jobs for at least one year, and 41% saying they plan to stay with their present employers until retirement.
  • Workers are taking measures to improve prospects down the line. About 26% of workers plan to go back to school to obtain a degree, certification, or other training.

The survey also finds a slight decrease in the number of employers planning to add new, full-time workers in the next three months (23%, a decline from the previous quarter); 10% plan to decrease headcount; 63% anticipate no change; and 4% are undecided.

Last In, First Out and the Future Job Market

fordyce-default

The unemployment rate jumped to a five-year high this August as more employers continue to cut jobs. This comes as no surprise with the weak economy, struggling financial markets, and as Congress scrambles with its $700 billion bailout plan of the U.S. financial system.

But what does the future job market look like? What careers are the safest bets for weathering the storm?
