The “We Would Have Found Him On Our Own” Defense

Jeff Allen COllection Tip

Editor’s Note: Every Monday Jeff Allen offers you a tip about what you should do to ensure you never miss out — or get beat out — of your well-earned fee.

What Client Says:

We would have found the candidate on our own.

How Client Pays:

This “defense” is no defense at all.

It is a political move usually initiated by an insecure human resourcer worried about his job. As one for nine years, I can testify about this one — the pressure is horrendous when some manager doesn’t want the fee coming out of his procurement budget.

Expect the argument that there was a mob scene in the employment lobby with “qualified” candidates just like yours. We’ve even had HR types bring in stacks of resumes to court.

But this one’s a loser for a client. It’s all about whether you were the source of the hire.

If you were — even partially — you just earned yourself a full fee!
